From somewhere between post-rock and progressive, where labels are left behind, Naria releases their second single as part of their conceptual album Lyra-La. This band doesn’t take the easy road or aim to please with formulas. Their music is meant to be listened to without rush — to get lost in every texture and be carried away by stories that cross the boundaries of consciousness.
In Dreams, Candles And Batteries For Breakfast, they dive into the most fluid and dreamlike corner of their sonic universe, representing the element of water in this existential narrative.
The song begins calmly, as if floating, and slowly pulls you into a sea of sensations. The lyrics tell the story of a man trapped between sleep and death, in a stormy ocean, confronting memories and visions. The phrase “Dreams and candles and batteries for breakfast” appears as the answer to a question that was never heard — and the woman with golden and blue hair fades away before she even cares about the response.
The track plays with confusion, desire, and the abandonment of logic. That image of the protagonist with his jaw hanging “forced by the law of gravity” struck me as brutally poetic.
There’s a constant contrast: moments of almost whispered calm followed by instrumental explosions that seem to symbolize emotional waves. The music feels like watching a movie with no images, where the instruments narrate what words only hint at.
The production on this track is impeccable. The mix gives each instrument its space, while at the same time merging everything into a hypnotic whole. The vibrant, immersive guitars move from clean passages to powerful, intense sections. The bass and drums build a solid foundation that supports the many dynamic shifts, and the vocal arrangements shine with expression and nuance.
I appreciate that they take their time to develop musical ideas — nothing feels rushed. The seven-minute piece flows naturally, like a current that keeps changing shape as it moves forward.
Naria delivers a work that isn’t just listened to — it’s lived. Dreams, Candles And Batteries For Breakfast is a testament to how progressive rock continues to reinvent itself with both sensitivity and boldness.
Follow them on social media — and of course, stay tuned for more of my recommendations so you don’t miss the best in music.
